Romper Room

Romper - Target, Shoes - Nordstrom, Bracelet - Vintage, Necklace - Coral from Hawaii

I told you here that you would be seeing a lot of rompers on this blog in the upcoming weeks of summer, and here's a post to show you I wasn't lying. I tend to love something to death. I overwater my plants, I once overfed my bunny, and now it's time for rompers to have their turn. They're just so cool and comfortable and easy to throw on when you're feeling a little uninspired or rushed or both. The only downside to them that I can tell is that you basically have to get naked to use the bathroom. But since I'm assuming hoping that all of you use the bathroom when you're alone, you shouldn't feel shy about peeling down to the buff. Heck, on a hot summer day, it's a nice way to cool off, isn't it? Um, okkkkay...moving on....

I'm actually headed down to LA for a little bit for a mini vacay this week. I can't wait to be what I sometimes still consider "home," even though I've now moved. I can't wait to get pampered by my mother, hang out with my sisters, play with my friends, eat great food, and hit up some vintage shops that I've been missing. I also have Disneyland on the agenda tentatively, and I'm more excited about it than I'd like to admit. I LOVE Disneyland. Looking forward to sharing my pics from my vacay with you...stay tuned!

Blushing Again

Tank - American Apparel, Skirt - H&M, Wedges - Nordstrom, Bracelets - ModCloth & Vintage

I've mentioned before on this blog how much I love the color blush. One of the things I like best about it is the fact that it's a great color to wear during any season. There's just something about it that lends a touch of sophistication to any outfit. It's girly, without being overtly so, and it works for daytime, nighttime, and everything else in between. OK, I'll stop the blush gush before you think blush and I are dating. Don't be silly. I would never gush this much over the boyfriend.

Overrated Truth

Shirt - F21, Pants - Banana Republic, Bracelet - ModCloth, Watch - Vintage
I have always loved how white pants can instantly make an outfit look so summery and crisp. But there's a dilemma when you are petite and curvy like me, since it's a pretty universal truth that white is not the most slimming color. But since this blog is about feeling good and taken chances, I decided to ignore the universal truth and go for the white pants. I ignore a lot of universal truths, come to think of it. Like in order for clothes to get clean, you have to do the laundry. And in order to save money, you have to not spend it. Such simple truths, and yet so easy to ignore.

Temperatures are supposed to skyrocket this weekend, so we're going to be getting away to a friend's cabin in Lake Tahoe for a couple of days. I can't wait to barbecue on the beach, DOMINATE at board game night, and of course, to play the slots. I am a sucker for the slots. Wait, isn't there another universal truth...something like "the House always wins"? Oh well, it's a good thing I'm so skilled at ignoring those pesky truths. Have a great weekend, loves!

Fear Factor

Romper - c/o PaperDoll on Melrose Ave., Bracelets - gifted, Hawaii

As a petite, curvy girl, I have found that there are sometimes certain clothing items that can be described as a little scary. Scary because they seem unforgiving, unflattering and built for girls who are about eight inches taller than me.  Scary because they look fabulous draped on lanky, tall mannequins or models who look nothing like me.

For a very long time, rompers instilled a little of this fear in me. I just assumed that they were too short and too unforgiving and would pull in all the wrong places. I was wrong. (And I'm actually admitting it, something the boyfriend says I'm incapable of doing).  This post is a testament to the fact that we should all be brave, swallow our fear, and try things on. Fashion is supposed to be fun, not scary, right? I have now learned that I adore rompers, and in traditional BSMMH fashion, I cannot stop buying them! This is fair warning that you will be seeing a lot of rompers in the upcoming weeks. I can't get enough of them. They're like cupcakes or dollar bills to me. One is good, but four is better.

I went back and forth on whether I should add a belt to this romper. I love outfits that give you the freedom to make the decision based on your mood. I opted for none this time so as not to break up the color of the romper and keep the outfit clean and simple, but you know I'll be changing it up and experimenting with different looks in the coming weeks. Like I said, I love me some rompers! Who would have thought?

Are there any fashions that instill a little fear in you, or that you're scared to try?

Full of Surprises

Dress - Libertine for Target, Shoes - Nordstrom, Jewelry - Vintage
I've mentioned on this blog before how much I like simple pieces that have subtle but frilly details that are a bit unexpected. This Libertine for Target summer dress is one of my new favorites specifically because of those such details. The black color, the eyelet trim, the dropped waist, and the embroidered brand are all surprising elements for a summer dress...and I like nothing better than to be surprising. You want to know what else? This is actually a juniors dress, even though I am, indeed, no longer a junior by any stretch of the imagination. Surprise! See, I'm surprising all the time.

I spent the weekend at more than one county fair (I'm not sure I understand how that happened either), which means that I inhaled way more fried food and sweets than my stomach can handle. This dropped-waist, loose sundress proved to be just what I needed as I tossed back chili cheese fries, corndogs, and deep fried Oreos. Yes, I need to go throw up now. Sorry, no surprise there.

Call Me Switzerland

Tank - American Apparel, Skirt and Heels - F21, Jewelry - Vintage

I know that I have been giving much love on this blog lately to bright colors and prints for spring and summer, but I hope you don't think that I don't have the same kind of love for neutral tones and looks. Spring and summer are a perfect time to show off your neutrals. They look crisp and light and sophisticated aaaaand for a Magda-wannabe like me, I love how they show off your tan. With all the store windows showing off their white-on-white and white-on-cream styles, I couldn't wait to try my own version with a simple white tank and lace skirt.

After a couple of weeks of triple-digit temperatures here, this weekend it's finally supposed to dip down to the 80s this weekend. I'm looking forward to maybe taking in a baseball game, cheering on my friends' dogs as they compete in an amateur dog contest, and HOPEFULLY seeing Harry Potter 7. That's right. I just admitted to the whole wide world that I am a serious HP geek. I'm not ashamed. Well, maybe just a little. Have a great weekend! xo.

Stranded at the Drive-In

Halter - Arden B (sample sale), Bracelet - Vintage

Being a Los Angeles transplant now living in a small town, I do my fair share of complaining about all the things I miss about living in a big city. But I have to say that one of the ways that my current town trumps big city life HANDS DOWN is the fact that this town has a drive-in theater. I had never been to one until about three years ago, but now I absolutely LOVE going to the drive-in! There's just something so adorably retro about it. I love the old-fashioned snack bar and feeling the summer breeze while I enjoy a movie with my pup fast asleep on my lap. I love the fact that we can pack up the car with yummy snacks and drinks and soft blankets and pillows and then settle back for a double feature for just $6.95 a person. These are amenities that you just can't get at a regular movie theater. And with my love affair of all things vintage and retro, how could I not love the drive-in? Every time I go, I'm half tempted to wear a full poodle skirt and a high ponytail just because it feels so 1950s there. I don't though. I think the boyfriend would pretend he didn't know me if I did. So for our trip last night, I went with a halter top and cropped pants for a little retro flavor instead, and he happily acknowledged who I was. Until I ordered a gigantic popcorn and started snapping photos of it at the snack bar for this blog. Geez. So unsupportive.

For more on drive-ins, check out ModCloth's recent blog entry about them. I love ModCloth. I love drive-ins. ModCloth loves drive-ins. Best threesome ever.

Aquorange Time

Tank - Target, Skirt - H&M, Ring - gifted from sister, Earrings - ModCloth
A few months ago, I saw an old picture of Twiggy (circa 1970s)  in a fashion magazine, and she was wearing the most adorable orange drawstring pants, paired with a long-sleeved aqua-colored top. When I saw it, something just clicked for me. Ever since then, I have become OBSESSED with the aqua-orange combination. Or "aquorange" as I call it. I'm trying to get that to catch on. Any day now, I'm thinking. Yep, aaaany day.

In the meantime, I. Can't. Stop. Wearing. Aquorange. (See how I just snuck that word in there? That's how you do it, you know). I just love how the combination is somewhat unexpected and yet the colors play so well off each other. If you haven't tried it yet...go for it! It's bold and yet not too crazy. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but how chic was Fred Flinstone for his time? He rocked this color combination since prehistoric times. Fred, you are the godfather of aquorange. (See how I did that again there? I'm slick, I tell you).

By the way, how cute is this bow skirt with POCKETS? I am also loving bows this season, and this skirt, with its dusty orange shade and flattering cut was definitely a must-have for me. I'm sure you've noticed by now that my definition of "must-have" is not something that I can't live without. It's something that makes living life all the more worth it. This description can apply to clothing, shoes, a loved one, or even a spoonful of ice cream. If that definition of "must-have" is wrong, then I definitely don't wanna be right.
