The Little Dress No One Wanted

Dress - Vintage, Shoes - Lucky c/o ModCloth, Watch - Swatch (stolen from BF), Bracelet - Tiffany (gifted)
I've mentioned this dress briefly on the blog before, but now it's time to tell its story. I found this puppy on the clearance rack of my favorite vintage shop, marked down to five dollars! The shop owner told me that multiple people had tried the dress on since she brought it to the store, but everyone had rejected it. I was drawn to the cute geometric print and the flowy full skirt, so I tried it on anyway. It turned out that everyone was right. It did fit funny. See, this dress originally had long, tight and tapered sleeves and a much higher neckline. As the bf put it when I tried it on, it made me look like a schoolmarm/librarian. But I saw the potential in this little rejected dress, and I brought it home. I had my mom, the amazing seamstress, cut the sleeves off and alter the neckline a little lower, and ta...DA! What do you think?

I think it turned out to be adorable...and it was only five dollars! It's one of the things I love about vintage clothing. When you buy something new, and it doesn't fit quite right, you don't feel like it would be right to do all these things to change and alter it. But when it's vintage, it's fun and exciting to find ways to modernize and change it a little bit. It means that every vintage piece has hundreds of possibilities, and it's fun to be creative and imagine what the piece could be with a little needle and thread. Much kudos to my mother who is amazing at redesigning my clothes...and kudos to this poor little dress that nobody wanted! The moral of this story is to never judge a vintage dress by its cover. Look at all the fun twirling you might miss out on? (see below)

When I first read the title of your blog post I was like, "no way!". I would totally want that dress if that was how it was originally. Thank goodness for your mom. She did a wonderful job. Love the belt!
